Football, Europe and the Press: Imagined Identities?

Co-author Liz Crolley

"Readable, authoritative, fascinating. An attractive addition to the Sport in the Global Society Series." (Professor J.A. Mangan, University of Strathclyde, pre-publication review).

This new book, published by
Frank Cass in the Sport in the Global Society series and co-authored with Liz Crolley, examines the representation and construction of national, regional, and group identities in European football journalism covering five countries: England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Notions of the respective national stereotypes are explored in each of the countries studied. For instance, how is English fighting spirit viewed at home and on the continent? Is the stereotype of the French as a nation producing stylish, elegant football teams the same from country to country? Are there differences from country to country in the reconstruction of the traditional image of the Germans as being efficient and technically competent? Similarly, the perpetuation of diverse regional identities within the nations in question is also explored: how is the existence of regional movements in Spain, for example, portrayed by football writing in that country? Finally, group identities such as those of black players (in England) or women (in France) are analysed with a view to understanding how football writing reconstructs traditional images of such groups. The book is based on extensive and detailed studies of the language used in football match reports and related articles appearing in a representative sample of 'quality' European daily newspapers including, The Times, Le Monde, and El País with the material being drawn from three levels of competition: the 1996 European Championships, the 1997/1998 domestic seasons, and the 1998 World Cup. The result is hopefully a unique, lively, and timely analysis of image and identity in European football writing which will appeal to a wide audience.
