Football and European Identity

This major new research project will examine historical sports media text representations of national identities in Europe’s principal football nations (England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain) and provide an insight into the complexity and fluidity of the concept of collective identity as communicated via football writing. Representations of European national identities will be examined in press coverage of football throughout the twentieth century with a view to determining whether or not the key characteristics of those identities are static or dynamic. Additionally, European perceptions of former colonies (such as North Africa and Latin America) will be considered, as will representations of 'new' football areas (such as the United States and south-east Asia). A further feature of the study will be an analysis of representations of nations within states, with the microscope being placed on Corsican and Catalan identities (amongst others). The work will be published in book form by Routledge and is co-authored with Liz Crolley.
