Author's Note
This short article, appearing in the journal Modern and Contemporary France, reviews recent academic research into football and society in France and situates my own research interests within this context. It highlights the main trends followed by French researchers such as Mignon, Bromberger and Ravenel and draws out the important issues of gender and ethnicity in the context of French football's reflexion of society's social and political structures.
