Is the stereotype of the French as a nation producing stylish, elegant football reflected in all European countries? Are there differences in the reconstruction of the traditional image of the Germans being efficient and technically competent? What are the portrayals of Spain’s regions in its football writing? How is English fighting spirit viewed at home and abroad? How and why are such stereotypes constructed? Can football journalism be seen as a last bastion where simplistic views on a nation’s identity can be aired, or does it reflect the same sort of complexity when it comes to national identity as do other sections of the media? This lively, cross-cultural examination of image and identity attempts to answer these questions by comparing English, French and Spanish football journalism on five European countries: England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
